Before their first life, puppies
wait at a station in the clouds.
Dogs who've lived a life
help them get ready to go.

Why are you hiding,
little one?

What if I'm not good
at being someone's dog?

I started with naps
and stolen slippers.

My person was still in school.
Some days, I waited at home.

But when that key turned,
I was first to the door.

Now they could give another dog
more than they could give me.

Why couldn't I give you
all this, Zukee?

about living with them?

It was my favorite pillow.

was right there on my belly.

But they remember falling asleep.
And not being there when I left.
