At heaven's gate...

Six hours late...
Did you lose your way?

No. I was waiting
for Mom.

The angel opened Levi's record.

Levi is taken to the vet while his mom, six hours away, cries and begs by phone for him to be kept alive until she returns.

Mom was at a concert, six hours away.
Levi was staying with her parents.

That morning, they rushed him to the vet.
Cancer. Internal bleeding. Fluid in his lungs.
There was nothing they could do.

Please... please keep him alive.
I need to get back to him.

Across ten years, Levi greets his mom as she returns from school, shopping with her boyfriend, and taking out the trash.

He'd been her boy since she was fourteen.
For ten years, she always came back.

You greeted her
every time?

Every time.
Maybe she had
snacks.

As the hours pass at the vet, Levi struggles to keep his head up and listen to his mom’s voice on the phone.

The hours passed.

Levi, I'm on my way.

His head grew heavier.

Were you
tired, Levi?

So tired.
Even lifting my
head was hard.

After six hours, Mom rushes in, kneels beside Levi, and sings his favorite song as they say goodbye.

Six hours later, she made it.

I'm here, baby.
I'm here. I love you.

Happy birthday,
dear Levi...

Levi slipped away with Mom beside him.

In heaven, Levi tells the angel that Happy Birthday was his favorite song, and they visit his new home.

But it wasn't
your birthday.

I know. It was
my favorite song.

Come on.
Let's see your new home.

Healthy again, Levi runs after a ball, pushes it under a sofa, and happily crawls back out.

You put it there
on purpose?

I used to
get stuck!

Levi moves his bed to the balcony so he can watch over Mom and her many birthdays still to come.

Your bed,
out here?

I can see Mom
from here.

She has so many
birthdays still to come.

The angel says this wait will be longer than six hours. Levi asks for Mom to have more time on Earth.

This will be much longer
than six hours.

Then let her stay
there a little longer.

Levi looks back toward Mom before joining his friends: Take your time, Mom. I can wait now.

There are more sunsets
for her to see.

Take your time, Mom.
I can wait now.

The story behind the comic

Levi spent ten years with his mom. He loved walks, food from the table, and long afternoons on the balcony watching people and the sunset.

When he became seriously ill, she was six hours away. Levi held on until she returned, giving her time to say goodbye and sing his favorite song, “Happy Birthday.” He passed away with her beside him.

I can wait now imagines Levi arriving in heaven six hours late—and an angel discovering why. These scenes are an imagined continuation of their story.
